10 TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL TRAINEESHIP AND APPRENTICESHIP

There are many effective study strategies to assist you through your traineeship and apprenticeship .
- Be in control of you own learning.
Ask as many questions as you need. You will be issued with quality resources and any supplementary texts to assist you with your traineeship.
- Be aware of your strengths and weaknesses.
Be honest with yourself and allow yourself to address where your strengths and weaknesses lie. Once you have established these gaps, do your best to communicate with fellow staff members and supervisors for necessary guidance. You will also determine your own learning style. Discuss this with your trainer so they are also aware and are able to adapt to your needs.
- Manage your time effectively
It is a priority throughout this traineeship that you have time management skills. You will need to discuss with your supervisor and trainer how your traineeship theoretical learning will take place. Ensure you are using your time wisely and you plan in advance how you intend on achieving your goals.
- Focus on one unit of competency at one time
Establish a personal study timetable and ensure you are communicating with your trainer and supervisor. It is important not to focus on just completing the work, but rather ensuring you have a clear concise understanding of the given work within the workbook. You will be issued with completion due dates for each unit of competency.
- Take the time to communicate with your supervisor & tutor
The relationship you develop with your workplace mentor is vital to a better understanding of what your workplace expectation is throughout this traineeship.
- Keep your appointments with ACC
Advanced Careers College is required by the Department of Education and Training to make regular monitoring and assessment visits with the trainee or apprentice and their supervisor. It is vital to make note of these dates in your diary and ensure the work allocated to be completed is achieved. If for any reason you are not available to attend our meeting in your workplace, you MUST notify the college by 8am the day of the appointment. If you attend the college for on campus training, it will be treated as a working day. You will sign in and out and require to notify of any absenteeism.
- Use your record book to your advantage.
The record book is your personal tool for identifying the units of competencies you have completed. It lists all the outcomes from each unit. Ensure you initial and date upon completion and discuss any issues or concerns of learning gaps with your tutor and supervisor.
- Supplement your study time
The majority of your learning will be done at the workplace, although bear in mind if major projects are to be completed by a deadline and this is interfering with your traineeship study, discuss your options with your workplace supervisor and ensure you inform for tutor with any decisions made. You may also wish togain more study time at home to ensure a clear understanding. Sometimes a nice quiet environment without interruption and distraction is the key to understanding a new concept!
